the weekly source for radiology professionals

Nuclear Medicine

Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston is opening our new PET/CT service starting April 23, 2008. This is a very exciting yet stressful time for the nuclear medicine department since we must not only learn the new equipment, but work with the radiologists to develop pediatric specific PET/CT protocols. We are also working with our scheduling team to clearly define how these patients will be scheduled. Currently, each patient will be scheduled in a 3 hour time slot with the first two hours devoted to the pre-scan workup and the last hour reserved for the scan itself. The final stage of our opening plan is to educate our referring physicians regarding the benefits of PET/CT. Our key audience is our oncology physicians and our neurologists however, other specialist such as endocrinologists are also interested in this imaging technique. To date, we have accomplished a lot and are still on target to open at the end of the month. It will be so nice to see all our hard work pay off!

It appears that you have planned very well for your new PET/CT service by involving both radiologists and referring physicians. Good luck with your new venture!

I admire techs who work exclusively with children. I wouldn't work in that type of setting if it was the last RT job left on earth.

This is a true example of once you set your mind to something, it can be accomplished. Your story is a leading example and motivation to us Radiologists not as established yet. I hope your opening went well and things are starting to run smoothly! Thanks for the inspiration!

Best of luck to you. Those of us who work with pediatric patients are to be commended , for that is not an easy practice. Thanks from all of us who don't work in pediatrics !
