Implementing Education

At Children's Healthcare of Atlanta, we have had many challenges this year trying to fit staff education into our busy schedules. With the implementation of Children's electronic medical records and numerous staff changes, it has been difficult to focus on radiology staff education. However, the Children's radiology team has continued to place staff education as a top priority, and so far, departmental staff have had the opportunity to attend a patient care class and a radiology education class in 2008. In addition, the Children's radiology department has plans to offer 10 more classes by the end of the year--3 additional monthly sessions and 7 credits at our annual tech symposium in October. All classes receive category A credit from the ASRT. Children's feels this is an important initiative because it keeps our staff on the cutting-edge with patient care and technology, as well as providing team members with the needed credits for their certification/license.

Quality and Education

Children's Healthcare of Atlanta mentors several students techs each semester. Radiology educators and Leadership work closely with each school to define expectations for students and to learn course objectives for each student who shadows at our facility. This communication is key to ensure all students have a positive experience at Children's because we realize that a positive experience can equal highly trained techs for hire down the line. Our communication consists of a welcome packet for students (typically sent to each student at least two weeks prior to their rotation), a brief tour of our facility and introduction to key staff and continued follow-up throughout their stay. We also provide daily feedback to instructors regarding their skill level and acclamation to pediatrics.
