Working Together Is What Helps Us Succeed

I've learned so much since I started my program but, one thing I hope I'll never forget is what my Instructor taught us the first day of class.

LESSONS FROM GEESE

As each bird flaps its wings, it creates an uplift for the bird following. By flying in a "V" formation, the whole flock adds 71% greater flying range than if the bird flew alone.

Whenever a goose falls out of formation, it suddenly feels the drag and resistance of trying to fly alone, and quickly gets back into formation.

When the lead goose gets tired, it rotates back into the formation and another flies at the point position.

The geese in formation honk from behind to encourage those up front to keep up their speed.

When a goose gets sick, wounded or shot, two geese drop out of formation and follow it down to help protect it. They stay with it until it is able to fly again or dies. Then they launch out on their own with another formation or catch up with their flock.

WELCOME TO THE FLOCK!!

I love that in my program we ARE like a flock of geese. No one is only "out for themself." We all encourage and support each other, and that is why we are successful.

In what kind of setting do you practice? Please describe what it's like working in that kind of setting.
Part of my week is spent in class learning the didactic portion of the program, taking tests, and practicing positing and techniques in our energized lab. The other part of my week is spent in a hospital where I get to work side by side with radiographers, and use what I've learned in the classroom to take images of patients. I'm only at the beginning of my second semester so my experience is limited, but everyday I learn something new.

How/why did you get into your particular field?
My mother has been a nurse for more than 15 years. When I was growing up, my dinnertime was spent listening to her talk about her night at work, her patients and the interesting things she did or saw. My mother's stories fascinated me, so even as a child I knew that, one day, I would work in the medical field. I chose radiography because it is the perfect blend of science and technology - the two things I've always been interested in.

What are your greatest professional accomplishments thus far?
My greatest accomplishment, thus far, has been making it through my first semester. Being a single parent, it was challenging trying to balance school, clinical rotations and taking care of my son, but I did it and even managed to make the Dean's List.

What are your professional goals for the future?
After graduating I plan to work in a hospital setting and continue my education. So far, mammography, CT and ultrasound have caught my interest. I'm truly looking forward to my future as an imaging professional.
