Online Education Topics

I have worked in the field of medical imaging for many years and by far my favorite imaging modality is Magnetic Resonance Imaging or MRI. MR images are truly amazing and every year there are exciting new developments and applications in this field. If you are currently not an MR technologist but are interested in learning about MRI, you can find a variety of online tutorials on the basic physics of MR, anatomy courses, and the latest techniques and clinical applications.

MRI was introduced into clinical practice in 1981 and has proven to be one of the most important imaging advances since the introduction of X-rays. MRI is a completely noninvasive technique that requires no hospitalization and the patient receives no ionizing radiation. MRI is the imaging modality of choice for the central nervous system and the musculoskeletal system and MR has made some major advances in the area of body imaging.

Currently MRI is diagnostically utilized for virtually every part of the body. New MR imaging methods and technology advancements are continuously being developed which will improve the speed, spatial resolution, signal-to-noise, and image contrast. Despite technical advances, this spectacularly successful imaging modality is still immature and promises to be more exciting in the coming years.

Understanding the anatomy and physiology of the human body is important to all medical imaging professionals. In July the Learning Center is offering a Free tutorial "Anatomy, Physiology, and Pathology Review Using MRI: Body" (3 CE credits). This course is a review and refresher of anatomy and physiology of the body with an overview of pathology commonly seen with MRI. This is a great review for anyone in the imaging field, especially if transferring into the MR imaging modality. However, the student should have a basic knowledge of MR physics and imaging techniques.
