Dotted with bridges, brick and seagulls, the seaside city of Portsmouth, N.H., is decked in hometown appeal. Upscale coffee shops and fancy art galleries exist alongside old-fashioned barbershops and tattoo parlors.

Portsmouth's history runs deep, a fact that is instantly evident on a walk through town. The John Paul Jones House offers a tour of the Revolutionary War hero's 1758 home. He was here to oversee the construction of his sloop, Ranger, believed to be the first ship to sail under the U.S. flag. A model of this first ship is on display and costumed guides offer tours.

The Moffatt-Ladd House was built for a family of prosperous merchants and traders. The elegant garden is as notable as the 1763 home, with its great hall and elaborate carvings. Many furnishings have never left the premises.

The Strawbery Banke Museum, an outdoor history museum that's grown to become one of the largest in New England, consists of 10 downtown acres and 46 historic buildings. While Strawbery Banke employs staffers to assume the character of historic residents, the emphasis is more on the buildings, architecture and historic accouterment.
