Great Insight Into CT Scanner Use
Posted By: Shane Stewart, RT(R)(MR)
The Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta radiology team recently had the pleasure of meeting with radiology leadership and staff from Jackson Memorial in Miami, Fla. Children’s visited this facility because it is one of the first in the country to use a portable CT scanner to offer superior imaging quality to patients who could not be transferred to the main radiology department.
The staff at Jackson Memorial was very accommodating and spent many hours with our team discussing the implementation of its portable CT program. We learned a lot and hope to continue our relationship with this wonderful staff in the future. It is very rewarding when healthcare organizations can work together to improve care.
Children’s will receive its first portable CT scanner in March and the experience at Jackson has assisted our department in planning staffing and workflow to accommodate this new technology.
Adapting CT Techs to Portable Technology
Posted By: Trista A. Raymer, RT(R)(CT)(MR)
How do you get CT techs, who are used to performing all exams in the department, to accept that fact that CT is now portable? That is the question we are now faced with since new technology will allow us to perform CTs of the head using a portable CT scanner.
This is a culture change for any CT tech. I know that I have never performed portable exams except in X-ray school; I went straight to CT after I graduated. But now, CTs can be performed on critical cases without having to transport patients to the CT department.
This new ability is wonderful for improving patient care, but somewhat scary for the CT tech who is used to working in his or her own environment.
